"1 cubic meter concrete mein kitne cement ke bag lagenge?" is probably the most-searched question in Indian construction — and for good reason. Order too little and the pour stops halfway. Order too much and money sits wasted in a corner. This guide shows you the exact method, with a worked example you can reuse on any mix.

Start with the mix ratio

Nominal concrete mixes are written as cement : sand : aggregate by volume:

For M25 and above, you should really use a design mix with cube testing, not a nominal ratio. For most house-building work up to M20, the nominal method below is standard practice.

The one factor everyone forgets: 1.54

Here is the mistake beginners make. They take 1 m³ of concrete and split it 1:1.5:3. Wrong.

Fresh (wet) concrete is compacted — water and cement paste fill the gaps between particles. But you buy cement, sand and aggregate dry and loose, where the same materials take up more space. To account for this, multiply the wet volume by the dry volume factor of 1.54.

Dry volume = Wet volume × 1.54

So for 1 m³ of finished concrete, you actually work with 1.54 m³ of dry material.

Worked example: 1 m³ of M20 (1:1.5:3)

Step 1 — Dry volume Dry volume = 1 × 1.54 = 1.54 m³

Step 2 — Sum of ratio 1 + 1.5 + 3 = 5.5

Step 3 — Cement Cement volume = (1 / 5.5) × 1.54 = 0.28 m³ One bag (50 kg) = 0.0347 m³, so: Bags = 0.28 / 0.0347 ≈ 8 bags (≈ 403 kg)

Step 4 — Sand Sand = (1.5 / 5.5) × 1.54 = 0.42 m³ (≈ 15 cft)

Step 5 — Aggregate Aggregate = (3 / 5.5) × 1.54 = 0.84 m³ (≈ 30 cft)

Step 6 — Water At a water-cement ratio of 0.5: water ≈ 403 × 0.5 = ≈ 200 litres (adjust for workability and moisture in sand).

That is the full material take-off for one cubic metre of M20 concrete.

Don't forget wastage

Theoretical quantities assume perfect handling. In reality, cement is lost in mixing, sand spills, and aggregate is left behind. Add a 3–5% wastage allowance on your order — more if you are hand-mixing on rough ground. This small buffer is far cheaper than stopping a pour to arrange more material.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the 1.54 factor — the classic under-ordering error.
  • Mixing units — sand and aggregate are often sold in cft (1 m³ = 35.31 cft); keep your units consistent.
  • Using nominal mixes for high grades — M25+ should be design mixes with cube tests.
  • Ignoring sand moisture — wet sand "bulks", so field volumes need adjustment.
