RCC Slab Quality Checklist: Before, During & After Casting
A stage-wise RCC slab checklist — pre-pour, during-pour and post-pour checks that prevent honeycombing, cover failures and leakage, with photo-proof discipline.

A slab is unforgiving. Once the concrete is in, every mistake — a missing cover block, a slipped bar, a gap in the shuttering — is sealed inside forever. You cannot inspect it later; you can only repair the consequences. That is why experienced site engineers treat slab casting as three disciplined stages, not one busy day. Here is the checklist.
Why stage-wise, and why photos
Quality on a slab is decided before the first mixer arrives. The pour itself is fast and chaotic; there is no time to fix reinforcement while concrete is going in. So the work splits naturally into:
- Before — get everything right while you still can.
- During — protect quality through the pour.
- After — turn good concrete into strong concrete through curing.
And through all three: photograph everything. A photo of the reinforcement mat, taken before the pour, is proof you can never recreate once the slab is cast. It protects you in disputes and lets a senior engineer verify remotely.
BEFORE the pour (the stage that matters most)

The two most common failures here are insufficient cover (leading to future corrosion) and top steel getting stepped down during the pour (leading to cracks at supports). Both are prevented by good cover blocks, chairs, and a supervisor watching the mat during concreting.
DURING the pour
Once concrete starts, your job is to protect what you set up:
- Slump test — check workability before pouring (see our note on acceptable slump values). A pour that is too wet loses strength; too dry won't compact.
- Pour sequence — follow a planned direction so you don't trap uncompacted concrete or create cold joints.
- Vibration — compact thoroughly to remove air and prevent honeycombing, but don't over-vibrate (which causes segregation).
- Construction joints — only at pre-planned locations (typically at points of low shear), formed cleanly.
- Cube sampling — cast test cubes for 7-day and 28-day compressive strength. This is your strength evidence.
- Cover during pour — keep a helper resetting displaced cover blocks and lifting bars back to position.
AFTER the pour
Concrete gains strength through hydration, and hydration needs water. Stop the water too early and you permanently cap the strength — no repair fixes it.
- Start curing early — as soon as the surface has set enough not to be damaged, usually within a few hours.
- Cure for a minimum of 7 days (10–14 for slabs and blended cements) — ponding, wet gunny bags or continuous sprinkling.
- De-shutter to schedule — side formwork earlier, but slab props stay far longer (often 14+ days). Never strike props early to reuse material.
- Inspect for defects — after de-shuttering, check for honeycombing, cracks or cold joints and record them for repair.
The pour is one exciting day. Curing is a boring fortnight — and it is where half the slab's strength is actually made or lost.
A quick self-audit
If you can answer "yes, with a photo" to these, your slab is in good shape:
- Was the reinforcement checked against the drawing and photographed before the pour?
- Were cover blocks present and correct everywhere?
- Was the slump checked and cubes cast?
- Did curing start the same day and continue for at least a week?
Running these checks on paper works — until you have three slabs on two sites and the records live in different registers and phones. The value of a checklist is only realised if it is actually filled, with proof, every time. A structured 3-stage check with photos attached to each item turns "we usually do it" into "here is the evidence we did".
